According to vice president of global GMC Sales and Marketing, Duncan Aldred, “GMC’s strong growth over the past decade is due in large part to Terrain.” 700,000 of the first-generation Terrain have been sold in North America since 2009. Now, GMC is redesigning the widely popular Terrain for 2018. The hard angles that defined earlier models have been abandoned. GMC has smoothed out the interior into elegant lines. But the visual shakeup is hardly the most interesting change.
Shifting from Levers
GMC’s biggest announcement was the removal of the shift lever. Electronic Precision Shift, a row of buttons and switches, will replace standard shifter. Neutral and Park are buttons, while Drive and Reverse must be pulled like switches. The difference will (hopefully) keep drivers from selecting the wrong mode. While it might seem strange to get rid of shift levers, the move frees up space in the center console. Room for storage has always been important to SUV buyers. But in a crowded market space, it’s hard to distinguish your brand. GMC hopes EPS is the kind of solution that will help them stand out.
2018 GMC Terrain Conquerors
GMC has revamped the Terrain’s powertrain selection as well. Buyers can choose from:
1.5L Turbo DOHC DI
2.0L Turbo DOHC DI
1.6L Turbo Diesel
The 1.5L and 2.0L engines are complemented by new nine-speed automatic transmissions. The Ford and Chevrolet designed gearbox has never appeared in a GMC vehicle before.
