Natural associations with the brand “Buick” are comfort, luxury, and… maturity. But consumer beliefs and tendencies aren’t always aligned with the truth. If they were, Chevrolet wouldn’t be discontinuing the exceptional SS and Train wouldn’t be played on the radio. In the past few years, Buick has been playing a delicate balancing act. It’s building cars and crossovers that maintain a strong a link to the brand’s heritage of comfort and affordable luxury. But, at the same time, Buick is starting to deliver style, ultra-modern technology, and even performance. Look at the 2018 Buick Regal GS, for example.
The 2018 Buick Regal GS
The 2018 Buick Regal GS is perhaps Buick’s most exciting vehicle in years. It’s a thrilling high performance vehicle disguised as commute-friendly sedan. This is what Duncan Aldred, Buick Global’s vice president, had to say about it:
This is a sport sedan designed for everyday driving, but one that makes every drive special. The new Regal GS hits the sweet spot of the market: more refined and luxurious than the mainstream, more value for the price with style and premium features on par with higher-end competitors, and with standard features like AWD with active twin clutch and a rear sportback design that will surprise customers with its usefulness.
Naturally, the Regal GS is loaded with performance upgrades that make it almost unrecognizable from the standard Regal. Let’s start with the powerplant. The 2018 Regal GS offers a remarkable 3.6L V6 engine that cranks out 310 horsepower. But it’s not just raw power. Buick has included technology that automatically drops down to four-cylinder function when performance demands are low – ie., at low, stable speeds. This drastically increases fuel economy and brings the sport sedan in line with traditional Buick practicality.
Standard all-wheel drive gives drivers of the Regal GS a feeling of tremendous confidence. Meanwhile, the Continuous Damping Control system monitors the road and makes 500 adjustments per second to ensure appropriate wheel grip. The drive mode has GS and Sport Modes to suit conditions and demands. Buick has also included brakes by Brembo, sport-tuned exhaust, and sport steering wheel and pedals.
Of course, Buick has also included tons of features dedicated to comfort and convenience. There’s an available head-up display to project customizable driving data on the base of the windshield. You also get standard 4G LTE WiFi and an 8-inch customizable touch screen interface. For comfort, you’ll find only premium materials, like you’d expect in any Buick. You can choose AGR-certified performance seats with massage, heating, and cooling. They’re certified by the Campaign for Healthier Backs, so you don’t have to worry about pushing the accelerator.
