Buick Enclave Avenir

The 2018 Buick Enclave Avenir

After launching an Avenir concept vehicle, Buick pivoted and announced that Avenir would be the new name of their luxury sub-brand. It wasn’t clear at the time what that would entail, but now Buick have released details about the Avenir brand’s first vehicle.

Avenir

The Buick Avenir concept car debuted in 2015 as a sleek sedan with Jaguar-esque contours and a low profile. Many were disappointed that Buick didn’t approve production. Nevertheless,  the Avenir inspired Buick’s gradual reinvention. Now, Buick have decided to cement the Avenir’s importance to their company by lending its name to their luxury offerings. The first vehicle to launch under the Avenir label will be the 2018 Enclave.

2018 Enclave

Arguably, the Enclave is the most stylish Buick in recent memory. It is, therefore a worthy candidate for Avenir badging. Further, Buick reports that 90% of Enclave purchases involved the vehicle in its top two trim levels. Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC, says, “It’s a beacon for the modern, attainable luxury Buick stands for and is a natural place to launch Avenir.” It doesn’t hurt that the Enclave is one of Buick’s most popular vehicles.

The Avenir concept wasn’t completely abandoned. One feature that survived was the new grille. The 3-dimensional mesh front with chrome wings sets the tone for an overwhelmingly elegant SUV. Add 20-inch, six-spoke wheels with a pearl nickel finish. Meanwhile, the interior is an Avenir signature, featuring Chestnut and Ebony with contrast stitching and embroidered headrests. The steering wheel with wood accents, sill plates, and even floor mats have all been framed in the Avenir design philosophy. All of these pieces look even better in the light afforded by the standard dual sunroof.

Additional Enclave Avenir features include:

  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated second-row seats
  • Navigation, wireless charging, & 8” cluster display
  • 360-degree surround vision camera system for easier parking
  • Rear camera mirror

That last feature might be of particular interest. The Enclave Avenir will be the first Buick to receive a rear camera mirror. Also, the system will expand the rear field of vision by an estimated 300 percent. When added to the rest of the available safety technology, the Enclave Avenir really shines. Common features like lane keeping and blind spot monitoring are, of course available, but you can also get advanced features like full-speed Forward Automatic Braking.

The luxury market is hotly contested one, and it could be difficult for Buick to make headway. But, if the company sticks to providing standard first-class features at fair prices, and if the rest of the 2018 lineup follows from the Enclave, Buick stands a chance.

Buick Safety: 5 Stars

Buick Safety: 5 stars
Comment & tell us how important safety is to you!

Buick safety is well respected. In 2017, Buick safety ratings back that up. The company’s entire lineup received 5 stars from the NHTSA. This is the third consecutive year Buick has achieved maximum safety ratings for their entire lineup.

Buick Safety

Buick was able to continue its impressive run even as they introduced four new vehicles in 2016. The company redesigned the lineup to appeal to a younger generation of drivers. With an emphasis on sleek, modern design, Buick is picking up momentum. Through September 2016, Buick had sold 1,046,746 vehicles for the year. In 113 years, that was the fastest they’d ever reached the mark. And yet, despite the brand’s renaissance, a dedication to safety and reliability has remained fundamental.

For example, Buick’s flagship sedan, the LaCrosse, became bigger and more athletic for the 2017 model year. However, the sedan has maintained its stellar safety record. According to Buick, the achievement is owed to “the use of stronger, lighter press-hardened and high-strength steels.”

What Does 5-Star Really Mean?

In determining Safety Ratings the NHTSA puts vehicles through the following:

  • Frontal Crash Test Scenario
  • Side Barrier Crash Test Scenario
  • Side Pole Crash Test Scenario
  • Rollover Resistance Test Scenario

After each test, engineers test the dummies for a variety of injuries. The NHTSA only gives 5-Star ratings to vehicles that protect drivers in the most dangerous kinds of collisions.

Ultimately, the ratings show Buick’s long-standing commitment to safety has remained intact. This is all the more impressive considering they’ve modernized their line-up’s image. Drivers would be wise to take advantage of Buick’s combination of reliability and style before others start to clue in.

Buick Lacrosse: The Best New Large Premium Car

The Best Large Premium Car

The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada has named the Buick LaCrosse “Best New Large Premium Car.” The winner was determined by the average score of 70 top automotive journalists in Canada. They convene in Clarington annually for a four-day test driving event. To those who’ve driven the LaCrosse, the win shouldn’t be a great surprise.

Buick’s Canadian brand director, Mike Speranzini, responded by saying, “Thanks AJAC, we’ve got our happy socks on.” The playful response maybe undercuts the real excitement Buick is feeling for the recognition. That’s because the company is in the midst of overhauling its lineup. The objective is to engage a generation of drivers who see Buick as catering to a more “mature” audience… Old people. If they continue to make vehicle’s like the 2017 LaCrosse, that won’t be a problem for long. There are many reasons the LaCrosse received its award. But, for Speranzini, the LaCrosse’s recognition comes down to “premium styling, quietness and connectivity.”

Designing Luxury

The 2015 Buick Avenir Concept

It’s hard to argue with the first point. After all, the LaCrosse was influenced by Buick’s stunning Avenir concept car. You can see the family resemblance in the LaCrosse’s darkened waterfall grill, metallic side accents, and hood contours.

As for quietness, the LaCrosse once again stands out. QuietTuningTM and ultra-dissipative acoustic materials dampen the engine and the roar of the road. Active Noise Cancellation monitors the sound of the engine and emits negative ways to cancel it out.

It’s Fun to Drive, Too

A standard 3.6L V6 Engine with variable valve timing and direct injection gives the LaCrosse more than enough power underfoot. At the same time, the Stabilitrak® control system smooths the rough edges of the road. When engaged, the playfully stiff “Sport Mode” increases responsiveness and the feel of the throttle.
