Modern Car Repairs: Is DIY Repair Dead?

Is it getting too difficult to repair cars on your own?

If you’ve looked under the hood of your car (if built in the last 5 or so years) you’re probably doing a lot of head scratching and Googling to figure out a lot of things that used to be so much simpler. The old days of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) repair are numbered. Modern technology in vehicles continues to increase and garage repairs are becoming a thing of the past.

The Old Days

Changing oil or tires is pretty simple, so we’re not going to count those. Changing a transmission or engine used to be something a mechanically-inclined individual could do on their own with the right tools and motivation, and it didn’t take nearly as much effort as it takes now. Changing struts, belts, or radiators was simple and anyone with extra time could do it. My grandpa’s garage, like many I’m sure, was filled with tools and cars that he was constantly tinkering with. These days, the real car lovers still work on their own vehicles but many take them to shops, like our Service Department, for repairs and maintenance. But why?

It’s a Tough Job

Our technicians are highly trained in fixing modern vehicles. They are constantly upgrading their knowledge to work with new technology and parts of vehicles. The tools needed to complete vehicle repairs are more advanced and some are more complicated. And, of course, the tools are expensive. Our technicians are trained to fix cars that are newer. It’s something they have extensive training and experience in. They also have the resources to complete warranty repairs, software updates, and other complex computer-type issues. With all the new software and technology going into vehicles for fuel efficiency, performance, and even improving on old parts to make them work better, it’s important that a professional gets it done right. Capital GMC’s Service team has access to the most recent state of the art diagnostic and repair equipment, databases, and tools that make repairs easier and less time-consuming than the average DIYer. Simply, our techs can fix truck issues much faster than what you can do in a weekend.

It’s not just about speed. Our techs, as we mentioned, have extensive and ongoing training and knowledge about modern and upcoming vehicles. In fact, many of our technicians compete in nationwide competitions for Master Technician status. Capital GMC is home to 6 Master Technicians, 2 of which are Grand Master status. Which is a fancy title for “they know their stuff.” Don’t take our word for it, even people that don’t work for us think that hiring a professional for auto repairs is the way to go.

The Experts Know Best

certified service in reginaThis rings especially true when it comes to automotive repairs. We’ve already mentioned that our techs know best. And it’s true. The pros know the little things that DIY repairs may not know; a tightening of a bolt that could prevent an engine failure. They learn these tricks from each other, from training, or from pure experience. The repair that you’re bringing the vehicle in for is probably something that the tech has done before, maybe several times over.

In addition, life can get hectic. Taking an entire weekend, even an entire day out of a weekend, to fix something on your car is not exactly how you would want to spend your time off from your day job. Unless, of course, you’re a fan of tinkering on cars or making extra cash doing it. If you’re just the average guy or gal that enjoys relaxing on the weekends or days off, like most, then making an appointment with your GM Certified Service experts is probably the best. You’ll save time, mostly, but probably some sanity too.

It’s not as expensive as you may think, either. Routine maintenance on your vehicle will prevent ghastly expensive repairs later on. So keep your vehicle professionally maintained with oil changes, tire rotations, and the odd replacement, and you’ll find that your vehicle and your wallet will thank you.

What Makes Modern Cars Complicated?

Technology. It’s pretty simple. Cars are getting smarter, so they’re getting more complicated. Vehicle maintenance is no longer just an oil change and tire rotation. Now, it’s software updates, navigation, vehicle information computers, oil change monitors, and a bunch of other features that I’m definitely missing. But you get the point. Auto repairs are now an event if something happens to misfire or break altogether. It’s not a simple diagnosis from Gramps and a weekend project to help. Luckily, bringing it to Capital Service is the next best thing.
